Yukiko’s Trichology Journey

One of the questions I’m asked most often is, “How did you get into trichology?” The answer is deeply personal.
As a hairstylist for many years, I had spent my career helping people feel confident through hair. But in my own 30s, I began experiencing hair thinning myself. After a season of weight loss, I noticed significant changes in my hair density and overall fullness. At the same time, I was beginning to experience peri-menopause and the hormonal shifts that naturally come with aging. What started as a personal frustration quickly became something much deeper. Hair loss is emotional. It affects confidence, identity, and the way we see ourselves. And as I quietly navigated my own journey, I began noticing just how many of my salon clients were struggling with the same concerns. More and more people were sitting in my chair asking about thinning hair, widening parts, excess shedding, scalp issues, and changes they couldn’t explain. I realized there was a huge need for education, support, and real solutions. |

During the pandemic, when salon closures forced many of us to slow down and rethink the future, I found myself with an unexpected opportunity: time to learn. While navigating the challenges of being a salon owner during shutdowns, I immersed myself in trichology education and began studying the science of hair and scalp health. What began as curiosity quickly became a calling.
Since then, I have continued pursuing advanced education in hair loss and scalp disorders, most recently graduating in March 2026 as a Certified Clinical Trichologist. This journey has completely reshaped the way I approach hair care and wellness. I believe hair loss deserves compassion, investigation, and individualized support—not dismissal.
My passion for helping others became so strong that I knew I couldn’t do this work alone. I brought alongside my salon manager, Alyssa, to help grow this department so we could support even more people experiencing thinning hair and hair loss. Together, we are building a space where clients feel heard, educated, and hopeful again.
That vision ultimately led to the creation of OlyHair—a trichology practice developed through OlyCurl. While OlyCurl remains curl-focused, OlyHair is for everyone. We welcome clients of all hair types who are struggling with hair thinning, shedding, scalp concerns, and hair loss.

The OlyCurl Story

At the heart of OlyHair is Yukiko, a dedicated stylist with over 29 years in the beauty industry. Throughout her career, she has consistently sought out advanced training to expand her expertise—from specialized color techniques to hair extensions. But mastering the art of curly hair had become her greatest passion and calling.

Yukiko is a proud member of Curly Hair Artistry (CHA), an elite international network of curly hair specialists. In October 2013, she attended her first CHA symposium in Atlanta, Georgia, where she joined 30 curl-focused professionals from around the world for hands-on instruction and intensive education. Since then, she’s returned for additional symposia, completed Raw Hair Organics training, and brought a wealth of new techniques back home to Olympia.
Her dedication didn’t stop there. Yukiko became a Deva-Inspired Stylist after completing both a two-day course and a one-day advanced class through DevaCurl. In 2021, she earned certification in Head Shape Matters—a precision cutting method that considers the individual’s head shape, growth patterns, and cowlicks to create truly customized cuts.
These combined experiences have led Yukiko to develop the signature “OlyCurl Method,” offering a one-of-a-kind cutting and styling experience for each unique curl pattern. That same year, OlyCurl was honored with the “Best Turn-Around Award” from Strategies, a leading coaching company for team-based salon businesses. The salon was also nominated for the 2022 Staff Retention Award—recognition that reflects the passion, care, and community at the core of the OlyCurl mission.
Now with the expansion of OlyCurl into the world of Trichology through OlyHair, Yukiko and her team look forward to supporting you through every stage of your hair restoration journey.
